Welcome to "Everyone's A Public Speaker...Even You!" As soon as you make the decision to improve your public speaking skills you will be on the road to increased sales, successful job interviews, great friends and highly influential associates. All you need to do is realise that everyone has the potential to speak clearly, fluently and articulately and that you never know when you may need to employ these skills. It could be today, tomorrow, next month, next year but eventually you will need to make a public presentation of some kind. In this book I'll show you exactly how to make a dynamic presentation and indeed converse with people in all situations, formal or informal, fluently, articulately and confidently. It's very easy! Before we get started, I want you to know why I wrote this book and how you can truly benefit from it. In my many years as a conference producer, I have come across a lot of professionals, from a variety of fields, who, at some stage or other in their career, have found themselves in a public speaking position. These situations may have been trade exhibitions, information fests, or industry conventions. Whatever the occasion, they have found themselves willing, or unwilling, public speakers. Those who spoke well were always received well and, as a result, generated new business, while, on the other hand, those who presented poorly, often went away scarred by the experience and leaving a bad taste in the delegates’ mouths. Good speakers and presenters come from all walks of life, but what they all share is a passion, enthusiasm and knowledge for a specific professional field. This book has been written and presented as a series of 4 easy to follow workshops taking you through every facet of public speaking, so as you, the professional, will embrace public speaking as an opportunity to advance yourself, your career and the bottom line of your organisation, rather than cower from it and hope that you are never approached to give a public presentation. By employing the principles outlined in this book, when asked to give a professional presentation, you will be exceptionally well prepared, enthusiastic, entertaining, passionate and informative. |
This book has been structured as a series of mini-workshops, with each workshop focussing on a particular facet of public speaking: - WORKSHOP 1 – Writing the Speech: This workshop explores what it means to be a public speaker and answers the question of who is a public speaker? And, what makes a good public speaker? The workshop then identifies the various public speaking situations you may find yourself in and gives some examples of various speeches. Four key rules are identified which will ensure that no public speaking exercise takes you by surprise. You will be introduced to some tips and techniques for eliminating the dreaded UM and URR from everyday speech. Finally, how to structure a presentation and prepare a white paper is addressed. While this may appear cumbersome to certain folk, I assure you it is the critical part of speech preparation.
- WORKSHOP 2 – The Audio-Visual Dilemma: With this workshop, we will move into quite a dramatic, and important, part of public speaking. As the title suggests, the selection of audio-visuals can be quite a dilemma. We will look at the factors that influence the audio-visuals of a presentation including; room-style; what is available in audio-visuals? What is the purpose of my presentation? What is the message I am trying to convey? Are visuals going to enhance that message or detract from?
- WORKSHOP 3 – The Delivery: Ah! The good stuff at last! To anyone who has ever flirted with public speaking, workshop 3 is what it’s all about. How do I get my message across using…me! How indeed. We will explore all the important tips of public speaking including; Essential body language techniques; Voice projection; Pace and timing; Memory skills; Podiums – to have or not to have? Movement, gestures and many more vital delivery tips.
- WORKSHOP 4 – Lights, Camera, Action: Well, all of that in workshop 3 is good stuff, but how do I apply it to me? Practice…Practice…Practice. We will discuss some tips and techniques to find out what works for you and then, of course, we will get you to give a presentation, based on the presentation you have been working on, record it and send it to us for evaluation.
